Chin lifted, ears standing like two banners, this noble corgi plays a character straight out of a lavish bygone century. Dark velvet cloak, the quiet glint of a jewel, a hushed backdrop: the illustration conjures the mood of old painting cabinets. The deep tones of the setting and the gilt trim of the cloak build a frame worthy of an old master, where a wet nose stays the only clue to the ruse. That grain of whimsy turns a small herding dog into the lord of the manor, sure of his rank.

This portrait joins our collection of dogs reinvented as figures of the old aristocracy, waiting among the Dog Posters. Hung above a dresser, in a library or a bedroom, it weaves an elegant, mischievous backdrop cut out for corgi lovers and collectors of images that are both refined and playful. It suits a plush mood and a more stripped-back setting alike, always with the same amused elegance.
